District of Rivas

Rivas is the fourth district in the canton of Pérez Zeledón with a population of 6531 of which 3273 are men and 3258 are women. The total area of the district is 397.83 square kilometers and has a population density of 22.4 habitants for each square kilometer. The altitude ranges from 870 meters to approximately 2000 meters.

In this district the average annual temperature is 26 degrees Celsius and in the higher points in the Talamanca range temperatures reach 10 degrees Celsius.

This district includes the towns of Monterrey, Alaska, Los Angeles, part of Siberia, Boquete, Piedra Alta, San Juan Norte, San José, Buena Vista, Canaán, San Gerardo, Rio Blanco, Chimirol, Chispa, Playas, Chuma, and Altamira, part of División, Tirra, Pueblo Nuevo, Playa Quesada, Guadalupe, Palmital and Herradura.

Economic Activities

The principal economic activity of this district is agricultural, including coffee plantations, produce, ornamental plants and the production of milk. In the areas bordering Chirripó National Park, tourism is another main source of income.

History

Among the first people to settle in this zone were Hulderico Valverde and his wife Alicia Gamboa who arrived from San Pablo de Leon Cortes. Also worth mentioning among the first settlers are Octavio Castillo, Claudio Elizondo, Simeon Valverde, Humberto Gamboa, Bienvenido Barrantes, and Tino Barrantes.
