Amanita muscaria

Species of mushroom common to our high forests and in the paramo, always higher than 2,600 meters above sea level.  This mushroom is very beautiful and often searched for by photographers.

It can be found alone or in small population of up to 10 individuals.

It is found in acidic soils and in the paramo, and can be easily seen in Chirripo National Park during the months of May, August and November.

Reproduces from spores.

This mushroom causes hallucinations and distortion of percieved reality.  Among the effects produced are visual enhancements of objects appearing to be exageratedly large or small.

This mushroom is poisonous if consumed in large quantities.

The name muscaria is atributed to the flies witch land on the mushroom and are rendered inmobile by the toxins produced by the cap.

As a curious side note, the hallucinagenic effects are often described in fairy tales.  In addition, there is evidence that Siberians used this substance to enter states ecstasy; as well as the Vikings consumed this species to enhance strenght and resistance in battle.

It is recommended to not consume this mushroom due to the effects mentioned are incontrolable and harmful to people.
