Biodiversity - Green Honeycreeper

  • Name: Green Honeycreeper

  • Scientific name: Chlorophanes spiza

  • Category: Birds

  • Family: Thraupidae

Status:  Common.

Size:  13 cm.

Weight:  19 grams.

Elevation:  up to 1,200 meters above sea level.

The black mask on the head of males cantrasts to the brilliant green plumage (sometimes mixed with tones of blue).

Common to many species, the inconspicuous female,  is an opaque green, a color that allows it to blend in well.

Frequently seen alone or in pairs in the middle forest canopy.  Its diet consists of fruits and insects, which it traps in short, sporadic flights.

It builds its nest with leaves, fibers and horse hairs, weaved together with spider webs in the "Y" of branches, where the female cares for her two white eggs with brown tips.

Environmental tips

Did you know that the majority of aerosol products contain CFC (Cloroflorocarbons); a chemical that produces a grave threat to the ozone cap, causing accelerated global warming and a disequalibrium in natural cycles.

Be responsible and do not use these aerosol products.
