Biodiversity - White crested Coquette.

  • Name: White crested Coquette.

  • Scientific name: Lophornis adorabilis

  • Category: Birds

  • Family: Trochilidae

Status:  Common.

Size: 7 cm.

Weight:  2.7 grams.

Elevation:  up to 1,400 meters above sea level.

They move thru a wide variety of zones, appear when the small flowers of inga, vochysia, lonchocarpus or stachytarpheta are abundant and then they disappear during long intervals; inside the forest they are found in the high parts of the canopy, coming down to the level of the shrubs along the edges and in the areas of secondary growth.

They flutter slowly between foliage while they capture insects and small spiders.

During courtship, the male flys or flutters, forming short arches in front of the female.

When they are foraging the flight is very silent and constant;  flutters with the tail elevated.

In this area it is very common to see the female, while the male is less frequently seen.
